The meal-ready-to eat commonly known as mre is a self- contained, individual field ration in light weight packaging bought by the us military for its service members. For use in combat or other field conditions where organized food facilities are not available.
Mre's, can be used to help supplement your food storage or pantry they also can be used for hiking, camping, and pack in emergency packs. Stored in cars, office or home. The shelf life or mre's can range from 5-7 years if stored in the right conditions.
Freeze dried food is food that you can add water to, to make a meal. A typical shelf life can range from 5-30 years. Freeze dried food packed in bags can last 5-7 years the same as mre's. And freeze dried food also comes in #10 cans that can last for 25-30 years. An example of brands are mountain house and providence pantry. These foods can also be used in your food storage. Let's say your pantry gets low or even used up. Freeze dried food can be used as a back up plan to help sustain you and your family.
It is good to keep a variety of things for your food storage to help with whatever situation. Also if you have to leave your home for an amount of time for any reason these are easy to pack into a bag or backpack.
